What Beating Heart Is About
A young woman escapes from a reform school and tries to lift a foreign ambassador's watch. It does not go the way she planned, and she falls for him instead. Henri Decoin's 1940 film carries one of Danielle Darrieux's liveliest performances, a woman who is sly and yet cannot quite manage to be bad. Shot right before the war, it is a good demonstration of what a light French comedy meant then: fast dialogue, a well mannered crime, and an arrangement in which nobody is really harmed at the end. Claude Dauphin and Andre Luguet fill out the cast.
