What Between Eleven and Midnight Is About
One evening between eleven and midnight, a trafficker with a bad name is shot while walking through a tunnel in Paris. The case is given to Inspector Carrel, and a strange situation appears: the inspector is the exact double of the dead man. Using that resemblance, Carrel gets in among the man’s circle and mixes with his acquaintances. Everyone he meets is surprised to see him alive, and instead of falling the number of suspects grows. The film builds its detective plot on this play of doubles and blurs where the inspector ends as well. Louis Jouvet plays the lead in Henri Decoin’s ninety two minute French film, completed in 1949.
