What Beau Brummel Is About
George Bryan Brummel, a British officer, is in love with Lady Margery, who is betrothed to Lord Alvanley, and she loves him too; but she gives in to family pressure and marries her fiancé. Broken hearted, Brummel gives himself to entertainment, gambling and dress; before long he is the most talked about man in London, a figure everyone imitates in matters of clothing, and he is taken into the prince’s circle. But the same circle can drop him as fast as it raised him, and the debts pile up. In Harry Beaumont’s hundred and twenty seven minute American silent film, John Barrymore plays Brummel and Mary Astor plays Margery. It was completed in 1924 and started from a real historical figure.
