What When Ladies Meet Is About
In Harry Beaumont’s 1933 pre-Code film, Mary is a novelist writing about a love triangle who is herself drawn to her publisher. Jimmy, who wants her, sets out to break it up with a manoeuvre of some cruelty: he introduces Mary to the publisher’s wife without telling her who the woman is. The meeting between the two women carries the entire film, and the subject moves off the men and onto the conversation the women end up having. Ann Harding and Myrna Loy play them, with Robert Montgomery as Jimmy and Alice Brady and Frank Morgan in support. The story was filmed again a few years later.
