What Beaufort Is About
The year 2000. The Israeli army is preparing to pull out of southern Lebanon. Beaufort is a twelfth-century Crusader castle with an Israeli outpost in it. The commander of the outpost, Liraz Liberti, is twenty-two. The soldiers wait under rocket fire day after day. There is no enemy they can see; there is a threat that comes out of the sky and a wait for orders. The film is not about war but about withdrawal. Joseph Cedar directs, adapting Ron Leshem's novel, which the two of them wrote for the screen together. Cedar won the Silver Bear for best director at Berlin. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for best foreign language film.
