What Beautiful Losers Is About
In the nineties a small gallery in New York brought together young artists who came out of skateboarding, graffiti, punk and hip hop. Most had no art training, most made their own work themselves, and nobody took them seriously. Twenty years later the same names were turning up in galleries, in museums and in advertising campaigns. The documentary was directed by Aaron Rose, who ran the gallery, together with Joshua Leonard. Among those who speak are Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Ed Templeton, Harmony Korine, Chris Johanson and Margaret Kilgallen. The film celebrates the rise of this group but leaves one question open: what happens to work that starts on the street once it enters the market.
