Beavis and Butt-Head Do America

Beavis and Butt-Head wake up to find their television stolen. They set out to find a new one. In a motel a man named Muddy offers them money to "do" his wife; they misunderstand the sentence entirely. What follows is a chase across the whole country involving Muddy, his wife Dallas, ATF agents and two teenagers carrying a biological weapon. Mike Judge directed and co-wrote it, having created the MTV series. Bruce Willis voices Muddy, Demi Moore voices Dallas, with Robert Stack and Cloris Leachman in support. It opened in North America on 20 December 1996 and took 20.1 million dollars on its opening weekend to go straight to number one, the biggest December opening at that point, a record that stood until Scream 2 the following year. The domestic total was 63.1 million against a 12 million budget. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 72 percent, with the critical line being that it is unabashedly offensive, unapologetically stupid and unexpectedly funny. Who it is for: viewers who know nineties MTV humour and the tone of the series. Who it is not for: anyone who cannot take how the characters talk about women. The film knows what it is doing, and it still lands heavily now.
