Zombieland

A comedy set in America after an outbreak. Columbus is alive because he is a coward. He has made himself rules and follows them exactly; he does cardio, checks the back seat and wears a seatbelt. On the road he meets Tallahassee. The man is angry, armed, and his only concern is finding a particular brand of snack cake. Then two sisters join them. Wichita and Little Rock are con artists and rob the two men twice. From there the film is a road story. A supermarket, a souvenir shop, a house in Hollywood and a funfair. What the narrative is interested in is not fear but family: the four do not trust each other and the film changes that step by step. The rules appear on screen as text and carry the humour; the writing interacts with objects inside the scene. In the Hollywood section a famous actor appears as himself, and that is the most unexpected part of the film. Tallahassee's loss is revealed late and given in a single line; the tone changes at once there. The finale takes place at a funfair and how stupid it is for the characters to make noise is said inside the narrative. The film was made on a low budget and went far beyond expectations at the box office. Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin are in the cast. Ruben Fleischer directed. Who it is for: anyone who likes bloody but light comedy. Who it is not for: anyone looking for real horror; the film never tries to frighten.
