What Behind the Curtain: Todrick Hall Is About
The documentary shows what goes on behind Todrick Hall’s curtain. Hall is an artist known for his music videos, openly gay and endlessly productive. The film watches him build his most ambitious work to that point: the stage musical Straight Outta Oz. Rehearsal rooms, the question of money and the tensions with the company are all inside the account. It sets the brightness of the show beside the labour that keeps it standing. How messy and exhausting it is to build a work from nothing can be seen. The risk of taking your own story onto a stage is a subject too. Katherine Fairfax Wright’s hundred minute American documentary was completed in 2017.
