There has been no affair and no great quarrel; that is exactly why the decision astonishes everyone, and at first nobody wants to take it seriously. His children and their spouses all go together to the family house to talk the couple out of it, they stay under one roof through the days of Durga Puja, and in the meantime their own marriages are laid open one by one.
