What Benda Bilili! Is About
Renaud Barret and Florent de La Tullaye first saw Staff Benda Bilili playing on the streets of Kinshasa in 2004 and spent five years filming them. The musicians at the core of the band had polio and move around the city on custom-built tricycles. Ricky wants to make the group the best band in Congo; Roger, a boy living on the street, wants in, and over the course of the film becomes its soloist. In Lingala, benda bilili means look beyond appearances. The documentary opened the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2010 with the band performing at the premiere, which is more or less the ending the film had been building toward for six years.
