Benji

Joe Camp wrote and directed the 1974 Benji, which took thirty-nine million dollars on a five hundred thousand dollar budget and ended the year as the ninth highest-grossing release. This 2018 reboot is the work of his son, Brandon Camp. The family handover is a more interesting detail than anything in the film. The story moves to New Orleans. Two siblings played by Gabriel Bateman and Darby Camp befriend a dog living on the street, and when they are later kidnapped he is the one who gets them out. Blumhouse produced, which makes a company known for horror an unexpected home for a children's film. Netflix released it on 16 March 2018. It tries to preserve the original's strongest idea, which was building the story almost entirely from the dog's point of view, but tying the plot to a modern crime narrative weakens that simplicity. Who it is for: families wanting a classic dog-centred adventure. Who it is not for: viewers expecting the plain rural tone of the original, or who will find the kidnapping scenes heavy for small children.
