What Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened... Is About
Lonny Price's 2016 documentary follows the cast of a musical that opened on Broadway in 1981 and closed after a short run. The production was built with young performers and opened to great expectation; it was withdrawn within weeks. The subject is what happened afterwards. Price was part of that cast; more than thirty years later he finds everyone and asks who stayed on the stage and who left the profession. Footage from the rehearsal period carries the film. The same faces speak first in their twenties and then today; the narrative does not present the failure as a catastrophe and shows how lives branched from it. Stephen Sondheim and the producer also speak. Who it's for: those who like Broadway history and documentary about theatre. Who it's not for: viewers who do not know the musical; the documentary tells its cast rather than its content.
