What Betrayal Is About

Emma runs an art gallery. Her husband Robert is a publisher; Robert's closest friend Jerry is a literary agent. Emma and Jerry have an affair that lasts seven years. The film tells it from the end backwards: first we see the moment when everything is over, then, moving back, we arrive at the night it began. It was shot from Harold Pinter's play of 1978, with a screenplay by Pinter himself; the play is said to draw on the writer's own life. The reverse chronology changes all the tension: because we know what is going to happen, what we watch in each scene is who knows what. David Jones directed. Jeremy Irons plays Jerry, Ben Kingsley plays Robert and Patricia Hodge plays Emma. Pinter's screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award.
