What Beyond the Front Line Is About
The film draws on real wartime diaries and follows Finland's Swedish speaking 61st infantry regiment. From 1942 to 1944, from Syvari to the Karelian Isthmus, the regiment goes through some of the hardest fighting of the Continuation War against the Soviet Union. Ake Lindman keeps it at the soldier's eye level: waiting in a trench, the cold, losing friends, and the moments when orders are not questioned. Just over two hours that follow the daily life of one unit rather than any grand strategy. The place this regiment holds in Finnish memory gives the film extra weight at home.
