What Beyond The Visible - Hilma af Klint Is About
Halina Dyrschka's 2019 German documentary is about the painter Hilma af Klint. She made abstract paintings in 1906, before the works usually taken as the beginning of abstraction. The argument concerns why the work went unseen. Af Klint left instructions that her paintings not be shown for a long period, but the narrative holds that the real reason was the failure of art institutions to record women artists. Art historians and museum directors speak. The paintings are shown in detail and their scale emphasised. The documentary debates the question of the canon directly and takes an open position. Who it's for: those who follow art history and debates about reassessment. Who it's not for: viewers expecting neutral reporting; the documentary states its case from the start.
