Yung Lean: In My Head

Henrik Burman's 2020 documentary covers the rise and collapse of the Swedish rapper Yung Lean. Songs a group of friends in Stockholm put online find an unexpected response in America, and at sixteen Jonatan becomes an international name and goes on tour. The film is less about the speed of that fame than about what the speed does to an adolescent: drug use, sleeplessness, a severe period of psychosis and the death of one of his friends. Most of the material comes from the group's own phone and camera footage, which gives the film its closeness. What his family and friends say has more to do with care than with music. The tone is sad and undefensive. Who it's for: viewers curious about music documentary and the culture of the internet generation. Who it's not for: anyone who would rather not approach drug use, psychosis and death; the film addresses them openly.
