What Beyond the Years Is About
Yu-bong, a wandering singer, adopts two children separately, and Dong-ho and Song-hwa grow up as brother and sister. Dong-ho is in love with the girl, but having to call her sister, and Yu-bong’s obsession with making her a great pansori singer, wear him down; in the end he leaves home. Even so he never stops looking for Song-hwa, and he spends years refining his drumming so that he can accompany her voice. The film treats pansori not as decoration but as an occupation that shapes whole lives. Cho Jae-hyun and Oh Jung-hae appear in Im Kwon-taek’s hundred and six minute Korean film, completed in 2007.
