What The Surrogate Womb Is About
In the Joseon period a noblewoman who cannot bear children urges her husband to take a young peasant woman as a surrogate so that the male line will continue. Im Kwon-taek’s film follows what that arrangement does to the young woman, whose body and feelings alike are put to work on somebody else’s account. Kang Soo-yeon, who plays her, won the Volpi Cup for best actress at the 44th Venice Film Festival in 1987, the first award any Korean performer had taken at a major international festival, at a time when it still surprised people that South Korea had a film industry at all. The film won several prizes at the 1987 Asian Film Festival as well, best film, best director and best actress among them.
