What Chihwaseon Is About
Jang Seung-eop, known as Owon, was a nineteenth-century Korean painter noticed for his talent while he was still a penniless orphan and taken as far as the royal court. He belongs nowhere: he drinks, he fights, he bows to no one, and he does his best work in exactly that state. The country is coming apart at the same time, with the Joseon dynasty in its last years and foreign powers at the door. Im Kwon-taek shared the best director prize at Cannes in 2002 for this film with Paul Thomas Anderson, becoming the first Korean to win it. Choi Min-sik plays Owon. The finest thing in it is how long the camera watches a brush touch paper.
