What Revivre Is About
A middle aged executive has lost his wife to cancer; her illness lasted years and he spent her final period as her carer. Through the funeral and the days that follow, a young woman newly arrived at his office will not leave his mind, and the film describes his movement between these two things without shame about the grief and without letting go of it either. Its Korean title, Hwajang, means both the cremation of the dead and the putting of make up on a face, and the whole story is built on those two meanings. Im Kwon-taek’s Korean film was adapted from an award winning short story by Kim Hoon and is the director’s hundred and second film. Ahn Sung-ki plays the man at its centre, with Kim Gyu-ri and Kim Ho-jung in the cast. It was completed in 2014 and was shown at Venice the same year.
