Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil, in the present. When a young Guarani-Kaiowá woman kills herself, Nádio gathers the community and sets up a protest camp on the edge of a local farm, because that land is their ancestral burial ground. Marco Bechis shows how the land is being cleared for biofuel production, and gives one strand of the story to a relationship between the landowner's daughter and a young Guarani apprentice shaman. Two hundred and thirty Guarani who had never acted before took part. It was the first commercial film in which Guarani people appear in the leading roles rather than as background. It played in competition at Venice.
