What Garage Olimpo Is About
Garage Olimpo screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. Director Marco Bechis was himself abducted by plainclothes soldiers in Buenos Aires on April 19, 1977, during Argentina's Dirty War, and held and tortured for fifteen days at a secret detention center called Club Atlético; his Italian citizenship and his family's intervention secured his release and deportation to Italy. The film's set was rebuilt from Bechis's own memories of that real experience, down to the texture of the walls and the torture room itself. Who it's for: anyone curious about an Argentine drama shown at Cannes, built from the director's own real experience of abduction and torture. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a light, distanced historical account, since the film draws directly from lived trauma.
