What Kiss of the Spider Woman Is About
Two prisoners share a cell in a Latin American jail: one a political detainee, the other inside on a charge of indecency. To pass the time they tell each other films. The film also shows the film being told, and those passages are deliberately artificial; what begins as escape ends by revealing what each of them believes. The narrative never leaves the cell and the tension comes entirely from talk. Hector Babenco directed, with William Hurt and Raul Julia; Hurt won an Oscar for the role. It is adapted from Manuel Puig's novel. A real warning: torture and political repression are dealt with directly. The period's portrayal of the gay character is also contested now.
