What Birthplace Is About
Henryk Grynberg is a writer born in Poland. During the war he survived in hiding with his mother. His father and his younger brother were killed. Afterwards he settled in America. About fifty years later he returns to the village where he was born. What he wants is to learn what happened. In the village he finds his old neighbours. At first nobody remembers anything. Too many years have passed, they say. Grynberg goes from door to door. As the questions are repeated, the answers change. Remembering suddenly becomes easier. What comes out is hard to hear. The one who killed was not a stranger from elsewhere. In the end it becomes clear where his father lies. Henryk Grynberg follows his own story in the forty seven minute documentary, a Polish production Paweł Łoziński finished in 1992.
