In 2017, in Bisbee, an old copper mining town right by the Mexican border, the community prepares to mark the centenary of its darkest day: in 1917 twelve hundred striking miners were taken from their homes by force, driven into the middle of the desert and left there. The townspeople meet that past by staging the escalation of the strike; the scenes rest on conflicting accounts of the event and are, in a sense, directed by residents who disagree about it. Deeply personal passages torn out of family history build towards a large restaging of the deportation on the exact hundredth anniversary. Robert Greene’s hundred and twenty four minute documentary turns commemoration into contested ground.
