What Black Art: In the Absence of Light Is About
The documentary introduces the work of some of the foremost Black visual artists working today. Its starting point is an exhibition David Driskell put together in 1976. That show brought two centuries of Black American art together and was counted a landmark in its field. The film comes forward to the present along the road that exhibition opened. The artists speak for themselves, about their work and about how they work. How much room institutions have made for Black artists is a separate matter inside the account. The eighty five minutes are built as a tour of introduction. Kerry James Marshall, Kehinde Wiley, Carrie Mae Weems and Amy Sherald are among those who speak in Sam Pollard’s American documentary, completed in 2021.
