What Black Bear Is About
A filmmaker retreats to a house in the woods to break a creative block and meets the couple who live there. Then the film splits in two and the same three people reappear in an entirely different arrangement. Lawrence Michael Levine builds it like a puzzle, but the resolution matters less than the argument: both halves are about an artist treating other people's pain as raw material, and the second half makes that far less comfortable. Aubrey Plaza plays one person under two different pressures. Anyone unwilling to engage with the structure may find the first half hour misleading.
