What Black Hawk Down Is About
On 3 October 1993 American special forces mounted a raid in Mogadishu. The operation was expected to take a few hours; when two Black Hawk helicopters were brought down it turned into a firefight that lasted all night. Eighteen American soldiers and a great many Somalis were killed. The documentary tells that day through the men who survived it, and follows what it turned into in American politics. Chris Mills's fifty-seven-minute television documentary was made years before Ridley Scott's 2001 film. It works with archive footage, interviews with soldiers, and clips of the politicians of the period.
