Michel Robin What Black Mor's Island Is About
Cornwall, 1803. A fifteen-year-old kept like a convict in an orphanage escapes with a map and goes looking for the treasure of the legendary pirate Black Mór. With MacGregor, Beanpole, Taka and Jim the monkey he gets hold of a boat and puts out to sea. Jean-François Laguionie’s hand-drawn film has no interest in hurrying the adventure; it treats water, light and empty space as things worth painting, and leaves room for silence. What the boy is actually after turns out not to be treasure but a name and somewhere to belong, and the film lets that arrive slowly. It opened in France in February 2004.
