What Gwen and the Book of Sand Is About
Gwen is a young girl taken in by a nomad tribe in a desert world after the apocalypse. When her friend is carried off, she sets out with an old woman named Roseline to bring him back. Along the way they come upon objects left from the old civilisation; nobody knows what these objects were for, and the film makes that both comic and unsettling. The account is an animated film and builds its drawing on sand, light and emptiness. The adventure is not a fast one; walking and waiting take up much of its length. Jean-Francois Laguionie’s sixty seven minute French animated film was completed in 1985.
