What Black Sky Is About
Emilia works in a fashion house, looks after her sick mother, and is so short-sighted that she can only see the world by getting close to it. The film comes from Miopita, a short novel by Antonio Zozaya, and takes its whole shape from that condition: not seeing is both a plain physical fact and the measure of how a woman reads her own life. She borrows an expensive dress from the shop and tries to appear in front of the man she loves, and the distance underneath the dress does not close. What Manuel Mur Oti does with the Madrid night made this one of the most cited works in the neorealist current of Spanish cinema.
