Only You

Ali was a boxer; something serious happened in the ring and he gave it up. Now he works at a gym and speaks to nobody. Hasret is blind; she lost her sight after an incident and lives with her sister. The two meet by chance. Ali helps her, and then they begin seeing each other regularly. Hasret thinks she knows him and remembers something in his voice. A chance of an operation appears; she may be able to see. Ali wants it and is afraid of it at once. Hakan Yonat directs. İbrahim Çelikkol plays Ali and Belçim Bilgin plays Hasret. The film was a large commercial success in Turkey and among the most watched domestic productions of its year. The matter it builds is recognition through a voice; the film carries that as a mystery to the end. The form is melodrama and the narrative follows the expected stages of the genre. It was later remade in Korea and that version did well too. The fit between the two actors carries the film and the boxing sections were worked separately. Its limit is the script; there are too many coincidences and the ending is sentimental. Who it is for: viewers who like Turkish melodrama and romantic drama. Who it is not for: it is predictable, the emotional register very high, and the plot contrived.
