Hugues de Montalembert What Black Sun Is About
The documentary is built on the narration of an artist living in New York. Some thirty years ago he lost his sight in an attack, and in the film he tells that day, what came after and how he takes in the world, in his own voice. The images, meanwhile, are not sharp; they are blurred, broken up and shifted in colour. In this way the viewer does not merely listen to what is told but stands where seeing itself has changed. The film asks for no pity; its real subject is what takes the place of sight. The account gives a great deal of room to sound design; what is heard carries what the image cannot. The whole account runs in the man’s own voice; nobody else speaks. Gary Tarn’s seventy five minute documentary was completed in 2006.
