What Black Tuesday Is About
Vincent Canelli breaks out of prison minutes before he is due to be taken to the electric chair, and he takes with him Peter Manning, a bank robber scheduled to die right after him. With several hostages in tow they go after the money Manning hid from his robbery, meaning to use it to get out of the country. But the place they are holed up in keeps shrinking and Canelli's patience runs out. Hugo Fregonese's film does not let up across its eighty minutes and is surprisingly brutal for a gangster picture of its period. Edward G. Robinson takes the gangster type that made him famous and strips out everything likeable about it. The presence of the hostages turns the tension into a moral question: even if the escape works, who is going to be left.
