What One Way Street Is About
Doctor Frank Matson has been working for a gang. After a robbery he takes the money and the gang leader's woman and runs. The two of them take refuge in a small village in Mexico. There Matson becomes the only physician the village has and feels for the first time that he is doing something useful. But the men behind him have not forgotten. Hugo Fregonese's film carries the shape of film noir into the Mexican countryside. James Mason plays the doctor and Dan Duryea the gang leader. The telling does not present the escape as salvation; the man's new life is real, but the ground he is standing on is false. The last stretch of the film makes a hard comment about fate.
