What Blind Husbands Is About
An Austrian officer starts working his way toward the wife of a surgeon on a mountain holiday. Her husband pays her no attention, and the officer knows it perfectly well. The two men eventually face each other on the mountain during a climb, and by then the matter is no longer about her at all. This was Erich von Stroheim's first film as a director; he wrote it and played the officer as well. It is one of the harshest moral tales in silent cinema: nobody is innocent, and neglect is treated as an offence. The mountain sequences were shot at real altitude. Everything his later films are known for, the obsessive detail and the merciless eye, is already visible here.
