Blink

This 2024 documentary, co-directed by Edmund Stenson and Daniel Roher, follows the Canadian Pelletier family. Three of their four children are diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic condition leading to loss of vision for which there is no cure. The family plan a journey to show the children the world while they can still see it. Over a year they travel across several continents. The documentary's question is the list itself: what is worth seeing in order to be remembered, and whether a memory can be deliberately filled. The film does not overplay its emotional material. The journey does not always go well; the children get tired, the parents argue, some places are not what was expected. The cinematography tries to keep the landscapes away from travel-programme aesthetics. Who it's for: those who like family documentaries and travel narratives. Who it's not for: viewers wanting information about the medical course of the condition; the film barely enters that.
