What Bliss Is About
Harry Joy, an advertising man, has a massive heart attack, comes back after being briefly dead, and wakes up convinced the world is hell. Then he starts gathering proof: what his daughter is giving her brother in exchange for drugs, how the number of carcinogenic products keeps rising, how the notes he writes to prove he has not lost his mind keep coming apart. In the end he runs off with a woman called Honey Barbera. Ray Lawrence adapted Peter Carey’s novel with Carey himself. A fifth of the audience walked out of the Cannes premiere; the same film took best picture in Australia that year.
