What Blood on the Land Is About
In Thessaly in 1907, poor farmers working land held by large landowners are stirred into revolt so that the ground they work might become theirs. Odysseus, the son of one of those landowners, refuses to take up arms against the farmers, and the reckoning between two brothers in love with the same woman runs through the middle of the struggle. Vasilis Georgiadis’s hundred and thirty minute Greek film was written by Nikos Foskolos. Nikos Kourkoulos, Mairi Hronopoulou and Giannis Voglis star. It was nominated for best foreign language film at the 38th Academy Awards and won the prize for best music at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, and it was the second of the director’s films to be nominated in that category.
