What Blow to the Heart Is About
Fifteen year old Emilio notices the relationship between his father Dario, who teaches at a university in Milan, and the young guests who come to the house. One of those guests, a student of his father’s, is killed soon afterwards in a shoot-out with the police following an assassination. The boy comes to believe his father is keeping what he knows to himself, and goes without telling anyone to give a statement. What follows is a silent reckoning between the two; the film is not about terrorism but about an ordinary household it has touched, and it prises father and son apart. Jean-Louis Trintignant and Laura Morante appear in Gianni Amelio’s hundred and five minute Italian film; it was completed in 1982.
