What Via Panisperna Boys Is About
In Rome in the thirties, a group of young men gathers around Enrico Fermi at the physics institute on Via Panisperna: Emilio Segrè, Bruno Pontecorvo, Edoardo Amaldi and Ettore Majorana. They do enormous work in nuclear physics. Gianni Amelio’s film is as interested in the difference between them as in the discoveries: the tension between Fermi’s empirical, practical science and Majorana’s purer and far more troubled kind. Majorana’s disappearance in 1938 was never explained, and the film goes into that dark as well. It was made as a three-hour television film for RAI and cut to two hours for cinemas.
