What Lamerica Is About

With communism collapsed and the borders open, two Italian conmen, Fiore and his apprentice Gino, arrive in Albania. The plan is simple: register a shoe factory that will never open and collect the state subsidy. They need an Albanian name on the paperwork, so they install Spiro, an old man who spent years in prison and is no longer entirely present, as chairman of the board. When Fiore goes back to Italy for the money, Spiro disappears, and Gino sets out to find him. That search takes Gino through Albanian poverty and through Spiro's own history. Gianni Amelio tells migration backwards: what the Italians who once sailed for America are now standing in front of.
