What The Stolen Children Is About

A young carabiniere is ordered to take two children from Milan to an institution in Sicily. Their mother has been arrested for forcing eleven-year-old Rosetta into prostitution. The journey stretches out, the institutions refuse to take them, and the three of them end up crossing the whole country. The distance between them closes slowly. The child thief of the title is not someone who harms children; it is the carabiniere himself, accused while being the only person looking after them. Gianni Amelio never turns the subject into a spectacle. It won the grand jury prize at Cannes in 1992.
