What Blue in the Face Is About
A cigar shop in Brooklyn has become the neighbourhood’s meeting place: people come in, talk, argue and linger. Then word arrives that it is closing and a fashionable vegetarian restaurant is going in, and the neighbourhood mobilises to stop it. Wayne Wang and Paul Auster shot this on the same set as Smoke and in the same period, largely improvised, so it is a film about a place and the talk inside it rather than about a story. Harvey Keitel runs the shop, and a stream of familiar faces drifts through.
