Bob Spit: We Do Not Like People

Cesar Cabral's 2021 Brazilian film stages an encounter between a comic book character and the cartoonist who created him. Bob lives in a desert-like place built inside the mind of the artist Angeli; when Angeli decides to kill him off, Bob sets out to find his creator. The film joins puppet animation to documentary footage. Angeli is a real person and appears as himself; the narrative takes up ageing, giving up a body of work and the created thing becoming independent of its maker. The animation technique is elaborate and the production took a long time. The humour is black and coarse, with dense references to punk culture. The narrative uses science fiction elements freely. Who it's for: those who like animation for adults and Brazilian comics culture. Who it's not for: viewers looking for family viewing; the film uses coarse language and explicit content.
