What Bobby Sands: 66 Days Is About
In 1981, in the Maze Prison in Northern Ireland, Irish republican prisoners began a hunger strike demanding to be treated as political prisoners rather than as common criminals; the man who began it was Bobby Sands. For sixty six days he took no food; during that time he was elected to the British Parliament, the matter moved to the top of the world’s news, and the strike ended in his death. The documentary builds this around the diary Sands kept in prison; former prisoners, journalists and politicians from both sides of the period speak. Gerry Adams and Norman Tebbit both appear in Brendan J. Byrne’s hundred and five minute documentary; it was completed in 2016.
