What Bombay Beach Is About
Bombay Beach is one of the poorest settlements in California, on the shore of the Salton Sea, a body of water made by accident in the middle of the Colorado desert. It was once a resort for people with money and is now full of dead fish. Alma Har’el follows three of its residents: a small boy with a bipolar diagnosis, the town’s high-school football star, and a man well past eighty. The form is unusual too, mixing observational documentary with choreographed dance and taking its music from Beirut and Bob Dylan. It won best documentary feature at Tribeca in 2011 and is now taught as a work that moved the boundaries of the form.
