Bon Cop Bad Cop 2

David Bouchard is with the Quebec police, Martin Ward with Ontario's. They worked a case together years ago and have not met since. Bouchard is now undercover; he has been inside a car theft ring for months. Ward works at customs. The two men meet again on the same file. The car theft turns out to be larger than it looked; the stolen vehicles go abroad in containers and there is something else behind it. They have to work together again and they still do not get on. Alain Desrochers directs. Patrick Huard plays Bouchard and Colm Feore plays Ward. It is a Canadian production. The film is bilingual; the characters speak French and English and much of the humour comes out of the difference between the two. The first film broke box office records in Canada and the sequel was made ten years later. Patrick Huard wrote the first film and worked on this screenplay too. What the narrative builds is the cultural tension between two provinces; the film makes that its comic material and hits both sides. The scale of the action is larger than the first film and the genre moves closer to the American police shape. Its limit is the script; the plot is familiar and the double act does not carry the freshness of the first film. Who it is for: viewers who like Canadian police comedy and buddy action. Who it is not for: the shape is familiar, the humour tied to language, and the link is missing for anyone who does not know the first film.
