Bon Cop Bad Cop

A body is found on the sign marking the border between Ontario and Quebec, half in one province and half in the other. Two policemen have to work together: Martin, an Ontarian who follows the rules, and David, a Quebecer who follows none. Neither speaks the other's language properly. Érik Canuel turned Canada's bilingual condition directly into comic material, with the dialogue moving constantly between English and French and most of the jokes coming out of the switch. Behind the murders sits the sale of ice hockey teams to America. Colm Feore and Patrick Huard star. It became the highest-grossing domestic production in Canada up to that point. Who it is for: viewers who like action comedy and references to Canadian culture. Who it is not for: anyone troubled by jokes between two languages getting lost in subtitles.
